Streamlining Internal Tools for Efficiency: A Focus on Observability

Streamlining Internal Tools for Efficiency:
A Focus on Observability

To address redundancies and inconsistencies in our internal tooling portfolio, I spearheaded an initiative to consolidate tools into a unified platform, specifically under the observability section of the organization. This marked a significant transition as we shifted from unifying the user interface to consolidating tools into a single platform. The goal was to enhance user efficiency during active investigations of alerts requiring attention. The challenge was to achieve this without overloading the system architecture or disrupting users' current workflows to the point of rejecting our proposals.

As an effort to improve the observability workflows at Meta and be more efficient at gathering telemetries from different data sources, we addressed the core challenge: fragmented experiences.

Approach

Coming from the investigation space I was able to gather data and many learnings that helped our org close the gap between workflows and surfaces. We first documented each workflow, created archetypes to inform who we were designing for and prioritized features for our MVP.

Largest initial challenge: Vertical vs Horizontal

Many of the data sources rendered the telemetries in a horizontal direction which the team and I wanted to preserve, but we had one data source holding us back. Unfortunately, the largest user base was coming from one surface that followed a vertical pattern. We had to test and evaluate whether or not that vertical experience in this one tool was able to convert into a horizontal experience. The goal was to see how willing this user base would accept the new experience that would replace the legacy tool.
